One of the most common reasons why people refrain from adopting dogs is because of shedding. While it is normal in dogs, excessive shedding can actually be prevented. This way, you can adopt dogs without worrying about your allergies or the cleanliness of your house!

What are the causes of shedding in dogs?

Shedding is the process in which dogs lose their damaged or dead fur in order to grow new and healthy ones. It is a natural phase in a dog’s lifestyle. There are dog breeds that shed a lot more than the others, such as Labrador Retrievers, Chow chows, Siberian Huskies, and German Shepherds, generally, because they have a greater amount of fur compared to the others.

Dogs tend to shed heavily during the spring or summer season. And in between those seasons, they have minimal shedding that might even be unnoticeable.

However, when dogs shed heavily beyond these seasons, it could be caused by some irregularities in the body.

One of the most common causes of excessive shedding is an imbalanced diet. Lack of lean meat, fresh fruit, and vegetables can cause nutritional deficiency.

An imbalanced diet can also result in hormonal imbalance such as thyroid disease and tumor on other endocrine glands.

Parasites such as fleas, ticks, and mites can also cause hair loss in dogs. These parasites bring extreme itchiness in dogs which they address through scratching and biting into their skin. These lead to various skin problems such as dry skin, inflammations, wounds, and alopecia.

Improper hygiene can also be harmful. Some dog shampoos have harsh chemicals that may lead to shedding. Overexposure to water can also cause skin dryness.

How can I stop my dog shedding?

To stop shedding, you must first supply your dogs with the nutrients that can enhance their skin and coat condition. Healthy fatty acids such as Omega 3 and Omega 6 are known to protect dogs from skin ailments such as shedding. They can be found in salmon, sardines, fish oil, and other fatty acid supplements.

Adding regulated amounts of Vitamin A, Biotin, Vitamin C, and Niacin. These nutrients will moisturize and condition your dogs’ coats to prevent shedding, dry skin, and other skin ailments. All of these nutrients can be found in multivitamins that can be consumed by your dogs every day.

Using mild shampoo will also help. In general, you should bathe your dog twice a month. You can only go beyond this count if they get exposed to extreme dirt and strenuous activity.

    Shedding and furniture

Furniture and car seats made of leather should also be covered. This kind of fabric is known to be a fur magnet which can cause excessive shedding.

Brushing your dog’s hair at least thrice a week will also be beneficial. Not only can it detangle your dogs’ hairs, but it can also prevent the spreading of fleas, mites, and ticks. You should also use the proper brush for your dog’s hair.

Preventing excessive shedding in dogs can be really easy. If you’re a committed and responsible dog owner, this shedding can even be unnoticeable!
